Welcome to Georges Wood - an area of woodland in the heart of Suffolk, England in memory of George Fagg who died on Good Friday 2003, aged 27.

This blog is to record and share with George's family and friends the planting of the wood, which began in Spring 2011, and its ongoing development.........

Wildflowers and Wildlife

Welcome to our third blog on Georges Wood, in which we share with you some images taken this Spring.

The photo of the silver birches has been taken a few weeks after planting and as you can see they are greening up nicely (and so are the nettles!) – they have put on about an inch all over so far!

Below are some photos of some of the spring wildflowers on the site – the larger yellow ones are Marsh Marigolds but apart from the bullrushes I won’t know the names of the others until the botanist I told you about returns in the summer to do his survey of the wild grasses.

One of the (slightly) rarer wildflowers he found is commonly known as the ‘town hall clock’, a small insignificant flower with four flower heads all facing a different direction (like a town hall clock!). Unfortunately no photograph, as when I went back with the camera a few days later I couldn’t find it!

A big thanks to our friend and neighbour Jan who took the amazing photo of the water vole, spotted in the ditch by Georges Wood; obviously a good picnic spot for him!  The conservationist friend who was with the botanist found some otter dung on the side of the river – probably about a week old - so what with the deer, pheasants, foxes, kingfisher, owls and an occasional egret, we have a fair bit of wildlife visiting the wood.

When I get time I shall put some nesting boxes there and perhaps a small hide for any bird watchers to hide in and watch birds!
